EU Blue Card Germany: Nigerian Applicants 2026

Germany’s employer-sponsored work visa for highly qualified Nigerian professionals. Requires a job offer, a recognised degree (B.Sc. CS or B.Eng. CE from most Nigerian universities qualifies), and a salary above the statutory threshold.

HND holders: A Higher National Diploma from a Nigerian polytechnic does not qualify as a recognised degree for the EU Blue Card standard route. However, the IT exception (§ 18g(2) AufenthG) allows HND holders with 3+ years of professional IT experience to apply with a job offer. See the relevant profession guide for details.

Worked example: Chinedu Okafor, B.Sc. CS, Lagos to Munich

Chinedu Okafor, 30, holds a B.Sc. Computer Science from the University of Lagos (UNILAG). UNILAG carries an H+ rating in anabin; his degree programme is listed in the comments field, so no ZAB Zeugnisbewertung is required. He completed NYSC in 2018 and holds his Discharge Certificate.

He has 5 years of software development experience: 2 years at Andela and 3 years at a Lagos fintech startup as a backend engineer. A Munich-based HR software company offers him a Senior Backend Engineer role at €58,000 gross per year on a permanent contract. The role falls under ISCO-08 group 25 (Information Technology Professionals), a designated shortage occupation. The salary clears the €45,934.20 shortage-occupation threshold under § 18g(1) AufenthG.

Chinedu lives in Lagos, so he applies at Consulate General Lagos. Nigeria joined the Hague Convention on 24 September 2024, so apostille is now required on academic documents. He submits: national visa application form, signed employment contract, Erklärung zum Beschäftigungsverhältnis completed by his German employer, B.Sc. certificate and transcript with MFARI apostille, Tax Clearance Certificate (TCC, current year), NYSC Discharge Certificate, and 3 months of payslips. The Bundesagentur für Arbeit approves automatically (shortage occupation; no labour-market test). Processing takes 9 weeks. Chinedu registers in Munich and books an Ausländerbehörde München appointment for his EU Blue Card.

Settlement timeline: 21 months from registration if Chinedu reaches B1 German; 27 months at A1 with confirmed pension contributions (§ 18g(3) AufenthG).

Nigeria-specific document requirements

  • Apostille: Required since 24 September 2024. Nigeria acceded to the Hague Convention on that date. The designated apostille authority for academic documents is the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Relations (MFARI).
  • Salary documents: 3 months of payslips plus Tax Clearance Certificate (TCC, issued by FIRS or state IRS). An employer letter on letterhead is also accepted.
  • NYSC: NYSC Discharge Certificate (or Exemption Certificate if applicable) required alongside the degree certificate.
  • HND holders: An HND from a Nigerian polytechnic does not qualify as a recognised degree for the standard route. The IT exception under § 18g(2) AufenthG is available with 3 or more years of professional IT experience.

Common mistakes for Nigerian applicants

  1. No apostille. Many applicants submit documents without apostille, unaware that Nigeria joined the Hague Convention in September 2024. All academic documents now require MFARI apostille.
  2. Missing the NYSC certificate. German missions in Nigeria require the NYSC Discharge or Exemption Certificate alongside the degree. Missing it results in a return request.
  3. Wrong mission. Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, and Ekiti apply at Consulate General Lagos. All other states apply at Embassy Abuja.
  4. Assuming HND qualifies as a degree. HND from a Nigerian polytechnic does not meet the degree requirement for the standard Blue Card route.

When you need a lawyer

Most Blue Card applications from Nigeria do not require a lawyer. Consider one if your university is H+/- in anabin, you are applying under the IT exception (§ 18g(2) AufenthG), or you have questions about MFARI apostille on older documents.

Frequently asked questions

Which German mission do I apply at?

Lagos State, Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, and Ekiti: Consulate General Lagos. All other states: Embassy Abuja.

Does my B.Sc. from UNILAG, University of Ibadan, or OAU qualify?

Most degrees from University of Lagos, University of Ibadan, Obafemi Awolowo University, University of Nigeria Nsukka, and other established federal universities carry H+ ratings in anabin. Check your specific institution and programme at anabin.kmk.org. If H+/- or unlisted, apply for a ZAB Statement of Comparability.

Nigeria joined the Hague Convention in September 2024. Do I need apostille on my degree?

Yes. Nigeria acceded on 24 September 2024. Academic documents presented for visa applications now require apostille from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Relations (MFARI), regardless of when the documents were originally issued.

Does an HND from a Nigerian polytechnic qualify for the Blue Card?

No. An HND is not recognized as equivalent to a university degree for the standard Blue Card route under § 18g(1) AufenthG. The IT exception under § 18g(2) is available with 3 or more years of professional IT experience at university-graduate level. See the relevant profession guide for details.
