Germany Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte): Nigeria 2026
Germany’s job-search visa for Nigerian professionals. Move without a job offer, search for up to 12 months, then convert to a work visa once you have an offer.
Important: The Chancenkarte requires a formal higher-education degree at ISCED level 6 or above. A Higher National Diploma (HND) from a Nigerian polytechnic does not qualify. B.Sc. or B.Eng. from a recognised university is required.

Points example: typical Nigerian software engineer
Here is a worked example for Chinedu, a 29-year-old software engineer from Lagos with a B.Eng. Computer Engineering from the University of Ibadan (H+ rating, programme listed as “entspricht” in anabin), 3 years of post-graduation experience, and an IELTS score of 7.0 (C1):
| Criterion | Points |
|---|---|
| Shortage occupation: software engineering (ISCO-08 group 25) | 1 |
| 2+ years qualifying post-graduation experience (in last 5 years) | 2 |
| English at C1 (IELTS 7.0, certificate) | 1 |
| Age under 35 at date of application | 2 |
| Total | 6 ✓ |
Chinedu also qualifies for Route 1 because the University of Ibadan is H+ and his specific programme is listed as “entspricht einem deutschen Hochschulabschluss” in anabin. Route 1 requires no points check. He should apply via Route 1 (simpler) and note the points backup in the application.

Common mistakes for Nigerian applicants
- Skipping the apostille. Nigeria joined the Hague Convention on 24 September 2024. Academic documents now require apostille. Applicants who prepared before this date may have relied on legalisation procedures that are no longer the standard. Check with the German Embassy Abuja or CG Lagos for their current requirement.
- Claiming experience points while in NYSC. The 12-month NYSC service year counts as mandatory national service, not as post-graduation qualifying employment. Count your qualifying experience from the date of discharge.
- Assuming English medium of instruction replaces a language certificate. English C1 adds 1 point on the Chancenkarte points table. That point requires a formal certificate (IELTS, TOEFL iBT, Cambridge B2 First or C1 Advanced). A letter from your university stating that instruction was in English does not count.
- Applying with an HND. An HND from a Nigerian polytechnic is below ISCED level 6. The Chancenkarte requires a formal higher-education qualification. There is no route for HND holders regardless of experience or language scores.
When you need a lawyer
Most well-documented Nigerian Chancenkarte applications do not require a lawyer. Consider one if:
- You have exactly 6 points and one criterion is borderline (e.g., experience letters are thin on technical content)
- Your degree is from a university not yet listed in anabin and you want to argue equivalence
- You are already in Germany on a student or tourist visa and want to understand status-change options
- Your application has been rejected and you want to appeal

Frequently asked questions
Do Nigerian applicants need apostille for the Chancenkarte?
Yes. Nigeria joined the Hague Apostille Convention on 24 September 2024. German missions in Nigeria now require apostille on academic documents (degree certificate and transcript). Obtain the apostille from the court or ministry that issued the original document. Do not confuse this with legalisation: apostille replaced legalisation under the Hague Convention.
Does an HND from a Nigerian polytechnic qualify for the Chancenkarte?
No. A Higher National Diploma (HND) from a Nigerian polytechnic is classified below ISCED level 6 and does not qualify as the formal higher-education credential required for the Chancenkarte. Only B.Sc. or B.Eng. degrees from recognised universities qualify.
Is the NYSC Discharge Certificate required for the Chancenkarte?
Yes. German missions in Nigeria typically require the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Discharge Certificate or Exemption Letter as part of your employment history documentation. Without it, experience periods that include service time may not be accepted as qualifying employment.
Which German mission handles Chancenkarte applications from Nigeria?
The German Embassy in Abuja covers most Nigerian states. The Consulate General in Lagos handles applications from Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, and Ekiti states. Apply at the mission covering your state of residence. Both missions accept online applications via digital.diplo.de.
What is the Sperrkonto amount for Nigerian applicants?
The Sperrkonto (blocked account) must hold at least €13,092, which is €1,091 per month for 12 months (the 2026 figure under § 20a(4) AufenthG). Providers used by Nigerian applicants include Fintiba, Coracle, and Expatrio. The account releases €1,091 per month once you arrive in Germany.
