Do you qualify?
Short answer: as a Nigerian ML engineer or data scientist with a recognised B.Sc. in computer science, statistics, or mathematics, you can qualify for the Chancenkarte: either directly via Route 1 if your degree is fully recognised, or via 6 points under Route 2.
Critical note on HND: HND from a Nigerian polytechnic does not qualify as a formal degree for the Chancenkarte. Route 1 is unavailable to HND holders.
The Chancenkarte lets you move to Germany without a job offer and search for ML/AI engineering roles for up to 12 months.
Which degrees qualify for ML engineering roles?
Unlike pure software engineering, ML/AI roles often involve graduates in statistics, mathematics, or physics. The Chancenkarte qualification requirement is met by any foreign degree "comparable to a German degree". A B.Sc. Statistics or B.Sc. Mathematics from a recognised Nigerian university qualifies for ML and data science roles.
Qualifying Nigerian degrees:
- B.Sc. Computer Science (4–5 years)
- B.Sc. Statistics (4 years): check anabin for UI, ABU, UNN, UNILAG programme listings
- B.Sc. Mathematics (4 years)
- B.Eng. Computer Engineering (4–5 years)
Check your institution at anabin.kmk.org.
Which route applies to you?
| Your situation | Route |
|---|---|
| B.Sc. CS / Statistics / Maths from an H+ university | Route 1: no points needed |
| Degree from H+/- university, programme unlisted in anabin | Route 2: 6 points required |
| HND only | Not eligible for Chancenkarte |
Route 2: calculating your points
| Criterion | Points |
|---|---|
| Partial equivalence of your qualification | 4 |
| Shortage occupation (ML/data science, ISCO-08 group 25) | 1 |
| At least 2 years qualifying experience in last 5 years | 2 |
| At least 5 years qualifying experience in last 7 years | 3 |
| German at A2 / B1 / B2+ | 1 / 2 / 3 |
| English at C1 (with certificate) | 1 |
| Age under 35 | 2 |
| Age 35–39 | 1 |
Worked examples for Nigerian ML engineers:
Profile A: B.Sc. Statistics from UI (H+/- programme unlisted), 3 years ML engineering, age 26, English C1: 1 (shortage) + 2 (experience) + 2 (age) + 1 (English) = 6 points ✓
Profile B: B.Sc. CS from OAU (H+ programme listed), fully recognised: Route 1. No points test required. Qualifies directly.
Profile C: B.Sc. Mathematics, ZAB partial equivalence, 2 years data science, age 28, English C1: 4 (partial equiv) + 1 (shortage) + 2 (experience) + 2 (age) + 1 (English) = 10 points ✓
Worked example: Chinedu's Chancenkarte application
Chinedu Adeyemi, 29, ML Engineer, Lagos to Germany
- Degree: B.Sc. Computer Science, University of Ibadan (2018). University of Ibadan is rated H+ in anabin; the B.Sc. Computer Science programme is listed as "entspricht einem deutschen Hochschulabschluss." Apostille obtained (Nigeria joined the Hague Convention 24 September 2024).
- Experience: 5 years in ML engineering: PyTorch, TensorFlow, MLflow, Kubeflow, and AWS SageMaker, including production deployment of fraud-detection and credit-scoring models at a Lagos fintech.
- Financial proof: Sperrkonto with €13,092 (12 months × €1,091, binding under § 20a(4) AufenthG), opened with Fintiba.
- Visa result: Qualifies under Route 1 (§ 20a AufenthG). The B.Sc. Computer Science from University of Ibadan is fully recognised; no points test required.
- After arrival: Chinedu targets ML Engineer roles in Berlin and Munich. At month 5, he receives an offer at €63,000 gross/year from a Berlin AI startup and converts his Chancenkarte to a Blue Card.
What would change the outcome: If Chinedu held an M.Sc. from an unlisted H+/- university and had only 2 years of post-graduation ML experience, his Route 2 points would total only 2 (1 for shortage occupation, plus 0 for experience because the 2-year threshold requires at least 2 years post-graduation in qualifying work and the BA applies this strictly). Without a language certificate, he would not reach the 6-point minimum and the application would be refused.
Financial requirement
€13,092 in a Sperrkonto before your visa appointment (€1,091 × 12 months, 2026 figure).
