Points example: Ghanaian software engineer
Here is a worked example for Kwame Asante, a 27-year-old software engineer from Accra with a BSc Computer Science from KNUST (4-year programme, institution verified as H+ in anabin), 3 years of post-graduation experience, and an IELTS score of 7.0 (C1):
| Criterion | Points |
|---|---|
| Shortage occupation: software engineering (ISCO-08 group 25) | 1 |
| 2+ years qualifying post-graduation experience (in last 5 years) | 2 |
| English at C1 (IELTS 7.0, certificate) | 1 |
| Age under 35 at date of application | 2 |
| Total | 6 ✓ |
Kwame also qualifies under Route 1 if his specific programme at KNUST is listed as “entspricht” in anabin. He verifies this at anabin.kmk.orgbefore applying. Both conditions must be true: the institution must be H+, and his exact programme title must appear in the comments as “entspricht.”
Document checklist for Ghanaian applicants
Identity and application documents
- Valid passport (6+ months validity beyond intended stay)
- Biometric passport photo (35 × 45 mm, white background)
- Completed national visa application form
Degree and academic documents
- Original degree certificate with apostille from MFARI

Common mistakes for Ghanaian applicants
- Submitting an HND as the qualifying degree. The HND is classified below ISCED level 6 in Germany. It does not qualify for Chancenkarte Route 1. If you hold an HND, calculate your points under Route 2 (experience, language, age) without the degree criterion. If you cannot reach 6 points via Route 2, consider upskilling or waiting until you can.
- Not verifying the programme listing in anabin, only the institution. An H+ institution rating is not clearance to apply. Your specific programme must also appear as “entspricht” in the anabin comments. Check your exact degree title — BSc Computer Science and BSc Information Technology may be separate entries.
- Missing the apostille step. Ghana is a Hague Convention member, so apostille is required for academic documents submitted to Germany. Documents without apostille will be rejected at the mission.
- Confusing the WAEC certificate with a degree. The West African Senior School Certificate (WASSCE/WAEC) is a secondary school leaving certificate. It is not a university degree and does not contribute to the Chancenkarte degree requirement.
When you need a lawyer
Most well-documented Ghanaian Chancenkarte applications do not require a lawyer. Consider one if:
- Your degree is from an institution not yet listed in anabin, or your programme is not individually listed
- You hold an HND and are uncertain whether Route 2 gives you enough points
- Your experience letters are from multiple countries and you need help presenting them coherently
- You are already in Germany and want to convert your current permit to a Chancenkarte

Frequently asked questions
Do Ghanaian applicants need an apostille for the Chancenkarte?
Yes. Ghana is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention. Academic documents submitted to German authorities must carry an apostille issued by Ghana's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration (MFARI). Documents from public institutions are typically apostilled through MFARI directly. Confirm current procedures with MFARI before collecting documents.
Does an HND from a Ghanaian Technical University qualify for the Chancenkarte?
No. An HND (Higher National Diploma) from a Ghanaian Technical University (formerly Polytechnic) is not classified as a higher-education degree under German recognition standards. It sits below ISCED level 6. The Chancenkarte Route 1 requires a full university bachelor's degree at ISCED level 6 or above. HND holders may qualify under Route 2 (points) if they reach 6 points from experience, language, and age criteria, without relying on the degree criterion.
How many points do I need for the Chancenkarte?
You need at least 6 points from the statutory table under § 20b AufenthG. Shortage occupation in software engineering (ISCO-08 group 25) gives 1 point. Qualifying work experience gives up to 4 points. Language skills (German A1 to B2+ or English B2+) give 1 to 3 points. Age under 35 gives 2 points. A recognised degree alone does not award points but determines which Route applies. The maximum score is not capped; you only need 6 to qualify.
How much money do I need in a Sperrkonto?
€13,092 — that is 12 months multiplied by €1,091, the 2026 figure under § 20a(4) AufenthG. The blocked account must be with a German-regulated provider such as Fintiba, Coracle, or Expatrio. The funds cannot be withdrawn until you are in Germany and the immigration authority releases them monthly.
Which German mission in Ghana handles Chancenkarte applications?
Germany operates one mission in Ghana: the German Embassy in Accra. All Ghanaian nationals apply there regardless of their location within Ghana.
